Osteopathy

Osteopathy is a type of manual therapy / complimentary medicine that treats a range of musculoskeletal pain complaints using a mixture of hands on treatment and lifestyle advice. As with physiotherapy or chiropractic, osteopaths are statuary regulated and must be registered with the General Osteopathic Council (https://www.osteopathy.org.uk/home/ ) to be able to practice. This means osteopaths are held to a high standard to ensure they deliver good quality patient care and maintain up-to-date learning, as well as being recognised by the British Medical Association. Osteopathy can be practiced in many different ways, which means seeing two different osteopaths may result in two very different experiences with how pain is diagnosed and treated. At The Spine & Sports Injury Clinic the osteopathy services are delivered by Alexander Pouros (BSc Hons.)

At The Spine & Sports Injury Clinic, Alexander’s approach to practice, based on over 20 years’ experience in the manual therapy field, provides a detailed examination of the painful and surrounding areas to form a likely diagnosis and detailed recovery plan. Treatment can include a wide range of approaches from traditional osteopathic techniques such as local deep tissue manipulation (massage), joint mobilisations (joint movement), joint manipulations (joint clicking); though to self help exercise prescriptions, sports taping, therapeutic ultrasound and dry needing (medical acupuncture). The selection of treatment modalities is baed on the needs of each patient rather than a fixed method of treatment being applied to all cases. As a part of this, the patient’s preference is also considered because Alexander understands that not all people are comfortable with all the possible modalities. Common pain complaints addressed by osteopaths can include low back and neck pain, but osteopaths can also diagnose and treat other areas of the body such as shoulder pain (like rotator cuff injuries), elbow pain (such as tennis or golfers elbow), hip, knee and also ankle injuries. Because of Alexander’s sports training background before becoming an osteopath, he has a wide detailed knowledge of a range of injuries, and can either provide a recovery plan for treatment of your pain / injury or make recommendations for more specialist opinions (such as recommending a referral to an Orthopaedic Consultant) where this is appropriate.
